We all love coffee for different reasons; some of us may love them for the unique taste, for the different experience we get in every brew and every cup from different blend or brewing method while some may like it for the caffeine and its effects on our system, making you awake and aware for whatever tasks need to be done. Nowadays, coffee is probably one of the most popular beverages enjoyed by a wide range of age but children as they are also delivered in fancier recipes.
But, for those who are enjoying the coffee everyday, it is probably wise and just convenient to brew them at home. This is because not all of us will want to drive or order from a nearby coffee shop just to get a dose of caffeine for the day and in most cases we also enjoy more than a cup throughout the day depending on how much you like this bean-based beverage. Having a coffee machine such as Cuisinart SS-10 Vs Keurig Elite or a dedicated espresso machine sounds like a great idea.
But, besides the machine itself, one of the most important or necessary items you need to have in the kitchen is a coffee grinder. Many may ask why not just getting pre-ground coffee from a supermarket or store but the main reason why we want to have a coffee grinder is because freshly ground coffee will taste the best. The pre-ground coffee lacks any flavor and many of them are bitter, more than they have to be as well as feels thin on the tongue.
Enjoying a freshly ground coffee is like opening up a new surprise because naturally they can have a varying taste or flavors from blueberries, cinnamon, brown sugar, or even apples which only touch the surface when they are ground just before brewing. Just like bread and cookies, unfortunately coffee also meets the same fate when exposed to oxygen because it will slowly breakdown the organic molecules that result in destruction of some of the tasty flavors and textures; the process itself is called oxidation.
In coffee bean case, this process will also causing the aromatic oils to evaporate and since these oils are the part that responsible for aroma and flavors such as sweet and fruity floral flavors, it is best to keep them as fresh as possible and this is the reason why many coffee enthusiasts prefer to grind just before they want to brew the beverage. When the coffee ground is fresh, the organic molecules and aromatic oils will make your cup of coffee even livelier and more unique to its blend.

About Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso
If you are here then we assume that you are also agreeing with us that coffee grinder is an important part of your kitchen and the coffee experience at home. Fortunately, they are not expensive because you can find quite a lot of entry-level options and most of us can decide by the budget if we need to save some. But, in most cases the affordable will already be enough to serve the beverage using methods from cold brew to espresso machine.
If you are into Turkish coffee then we highly recommend to invest more since not all coffee grinders will be able to make the finest ground for this type of brewing. For those who are more casual about their taste, Breville and Baratza are two amazing options to consider as the two have good reputation with their machines and are also pretty affordable with good performance. They carry plenty of models to consider as well based on what you want to achieve and also budget range.
On the entry-level options, if you want both convenient and affordable machines, we do recommend the Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso. Neither of them are fancy coffee grinder but we do think they are ideal for home use and if you are familiar with Baratza Encore which we have been compared to Breville in the last article, then this one is very similar to the previous model. The difference is that Virtuoso will be a higher-performing or have a higher rated motor than Encore.
As for the Smart Grinder Pro, this coffee grinder is true to its name but only to a certain level. The idea behind this model is to offer a machine that is not only reliable but also convenient in modern kitchens so it does come with some useful features. Performance wise both Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso are very reliable and can do well for typical home brewing yet none will be able to grind fine enough to reach the finest consistency.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso Design
Most coffee grinders are looking similar to each other or at least based on the same silhouette so they will look the same as well but not with Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso. These two are almost the opposite in terms of design yet none of them are fully made with metal chassis. There are some parts with stainless steel on the Breville grinder but the plastic is more prominent. It is also fairly larger in comparison to this grinder from Baratza.
The bean hopper at the top is great to store some of your roasted beans but we do not recommend to keep them for a prolonged period of time. The Smart Grinder Pro can take up around one pound of bean while the latter only stores 8 oz. In addition, you will get a few accessories from Breville namely the coffee ground canister and two types of cradle to put the portafilter. In Virtuoso, we need to hold the portafilter manually when directly grinding the coffee bean.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso Grind Sizes
Next let’s see what Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso can offer because this is the most important part and this is the grind adjustment. One thing to note is numbers will not decide how fine or coarse the grind is since different machines have their own capabilities but from the description alone these machines can ground for up to 60 different settings compared to 40 grind settings. The further you go, the finest the coffee ground will be.
In terms or performance, both of these models are working really well and as you can expect, the coarser grind settings will be more uneven compared to the finest one and the finer it gets, the appearance of the coffee ground will become clumpier. The two are very similar however, not exactly at the same setting since they have different range but side by side the finer and coarser grind are about the same and can be used from French press or cold brew to ideally use with pressure portafilter.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso Ease of Use
For the ease of use, we do think the Baratza Virtuoso will be more straightforward but it doesn’t mean this machine will be convenient. The lack of timer is not a deal breaker for us but the small room for canister and the lack of portafilter holder or cradle can be quite annoying. This means we have to hold the portafilter or use the dedicated storage since the space below its spout is very narrow. It is however quick to get used to.
What you only need to do is adjust the size and use the on/off knob located at the side of the machine to start/stop grinding. On the other hand, the Smart Grinder Pro requires more steps as this machine has few features to note and adjust the grind size as well as dosing. It has a timer but seems inaccurate so we don’t really use it.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso Features
On the additional feature, between Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Virtuoso only Breville offers the dosing function. This feature is not to measure the coffee by weight as there is no scale on the unit but is adjustment of grind time in 0.2 second increments to give users higher control over their dosing. In addition, it also has a manual grind button on the unit where you slide the portafilter so we can press the portafilter to grind and pull it to stop; very convenient.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro vs Baratza Virtuoso
These coffee grinders are very useful for almost anyone who prefers to brew at home. They have a wide range of grind sizes and a wide range or usage as well from French press to espresso machine with a fairly good consistency further down the finer range. They are also very quick to adapt to and working reliably in typical household applications. The prominent difference is that Smart Grinder Pro has more to offer and more convenient if you often grind directly to portafilter.
All in all it is best to shop based on what you want to achieve because not all of us will have the same preference but among the two, we do like the Breville Smart Grinder Pro better because it is more convenient and looks more modern.
