There are plenty of tasty beverages we can try and even consume everyday for their taste or benefits. Coffee may not cure a disease but they are both tasty and help you to stay alert for longer; thanks to the caffeine content. For those who are afraid of losing sleep, decaf variants are abundantly available in the market as alternatives. Regardless of the preference, we all agree that freshly ground and brewed coffee are tastiest which is why many of us spend much in coffee shops.
However, if you are the type who likes to make their own favorite beverage at home, there are also plenty of espresso or coffee brewers and methods to deliver the same experience. One equipment we must have in the kitchen when brewing at home is coffee grinder because it is always best to brew from freshly ground coffee as pre-ground variants have spent a certain amount of time on the shelf which affect the taste of your coffee as it is exposed to air.
Needless to say, a grinder is just both convenient and useful when you want to get the best quality out of the coffee bean. When it comes to coffee grinder, there are some factors we may need to consider first but the most important is the type of grinder itself as there are either blade or burr grinder. This is the basic factor to decide which will suit you better but nowadays most people will simply go with a burr grinder.
The more traditional type is blade grinders that has blades inside that slice the coffee beans into smaller parts and almost like blenders, the longer we set the timer, the finer the coffee ground will be as it operates further yet, as you can guess, the result will be uneven as they are basically chopping the beans. The good side is however, blade grinders can be very cheap and makes it accessible for more people who want to brew at home and just get freshly made coffee anytime they want.

The other variant or burr grinders are the more popular and famous among users. They are more advantageous because precision and consistency are better in this type of grinders but some can be quite expensive. The burr grinders are operating with two burrs inside in which one will stay still while the other is moving so in terms of mechanism it will crush the coffee beans rather than slicing them. Due to this movement, your coffee grinders will be able to make a more consistent result.
About Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore
If you are here then it means a coffee grinder will make a great advantage in the house or probably you have various brewing styles to try and just love how fresh coffee tastes. For the options, there are actually lots of amazing machines out there with various different features and capabilities but it is quick to shop based on your budget because then we can narrow down the option to only some that we can purchase and still be wise to spend.
We also recommend looking at other enthusiasts to see which of them will be the better option and overall just cutting the shopping process. When talking about coffee grinder, few brands come to our memory in which among them are Breville and Baratza. Both of them are popular options that you may want to shop from and the reason is the two are known for their good quality grinders as well as pretty affordable depending on which model you will opt for.
If you are more on the budget side, we recommend to consider the Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore. Some people may already be familiar with these grinders or models because they give more for the price point and one thing we personally like from the two is ease of use because when it comes to brewing at home, convenience is one of our goals. Functionality wise they are coming with everything you need in a coffee grinder but only the basic and in comparison, the Smart Grinder is richer.
The Smart Grinder Pro may sound like an expensive model but it is actually on the budget list. What’s impressive is that this model offers a lot for the price point, including a small display which used to show you the settings it has. On the other hand, the Encore is probably among the most affordable grinders from Baratza which is more popular for their Sette like in our Breville Smart Grinder Pro Vs Baratza Sette and this one is quite less in features but still pretty straight forward.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore Design
As you can see from the sample picture above, both Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore are looking like most coffee grinders with a slim form and mostly plastic body but side by side, your Smart pro will be slightly bulkier than Encore. The Encore is also available in white as opposed to black and for Breville, this specific grinder is also featured with stainless steel casing on some areas. While the two have the same clear plastic bean hopper, the capacity of Smart Grinder is more than twice larger.
For espresso machines we prefer larger capacity but for grinder, we do not recommend storing the bean for a prolonged time in the hopper because it may ruin the bean quality. Similarly, they are grinding at the top and then dispense the coffee ground in the canister below but the Encore has an enclosed room or canister that stores the coffee ground unlike Smart Grinder in which you have to put the canister or portafilter below.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore Type
Now moving to the most important part, both Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore are burr grinder and similarly they are also conical type. Conical burr grinders are very popular because it is more precise and adjusted by degrees as well as long lasting. They are also made of steel which is why the grinders can get warmer as you do the operation but compared to ceramic which heats up longer, the steel will also cool down faster to let you do the next batch.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore Sizes
Moving further, these grinders are also featured with a different amount of adjustment when it comes to the grind size because your Smart Grinder Pro will offer a total of 60 different grind settings compared to Encore which is only 40. However, Breville is not an actual number or more just arbitrary reflection and thus, it doesn’t necessarily mean finer or coarser grind. The settings are located on the side of the Smart Grinder Pro and at the bottom of the bean hop of Encore.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore Consistency
On the performance side, both Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore are more of a coarser grinder so if you are purchasing them for Turkish espresso then we do recommend to look for a more specific model. In the higher settings or coarse adjustment these machines can get more inconsistent and we do recommend trying each level for the brewing method you will use. On the coarser side the two can grind quite well for French press and cold brew or pour over but the finest settings are only up to pressure portafilter.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore Ease of Use
Next is their convenience and we do think both of them are pretty easy to use with the Encore even more straight forward. As you can see from the sample picture above, this model has a pulse trigger at the front and has no timer so as long as you press the button, the machine will continue to grind. The Smart Grinder Pro has a timer and even has the setting to adjust the shot/cup amount that you can access from the front control panel.
In comparison, we do think the Encore is more straightforward but if you will be making a larger batch, it can be inconvenient as you need to stay beside the grinder to monitor the on/off process. In addition, it doesn’t have the amount settings like Smart Grinder that can make an automatic adjustment for the amount of coffee needed.
Breville Smart Grinder Pro Vs Baratza Encore
Both Breville Smart Grinder Pro and Baratza Encore are good options on the entry-level and convenient to have if you also have a coffee machine or brew at home often. The difference in consistency is not far apart and the coarser you go, the less consistent they are. On the finer settings while they can’t go as fine as Rocky, the two are still great to make espresso with if you have the machine. In terms of ease of use, Encore is simpler but Smart Grinder Pro is more convenient, moreover with the portafilter holder and dedicated canister.
All in all it is all up to your preference because not all of us will have the same taste. Personally we recommend the Smart Grinder Pro because this machine is more convenient but still making a fine ground and a wide range of options of sizes to adjust.
